POST BREXIT UPDATE
I am leaving the text below as it was when I began this site. But as you are probably aware it is a bit out of date.
I still think that going over to Boulogne to stock up on wine is a good idea. But there are new rules due to a political event that has now occurred. I won’t mention this again. All you want to know is ‘what is the wine limit?’
It is 18 litres per person. That is 24 x 75cl bottles. (At least I think it is per person, and not per vehicle, I forgot to double check that when I was last there. I will confirm).
That is a big reduction from the 60 odd bottles that I would sometimes buy, but a lot better than the 2 bottle limit that some of you may remember from years ago. Four adults could therefore bring back 96 bottles. Still makes a day or two over in Boulogne worthwhile. And I don’t just go for the wine. it is a great city. (And wi-fi now installed in my rental house).

A lot of people take a ferry trip over to Calais to do the ‘booze cruise’.
You pop over on a ferry to Calais, pile up a trolley full of wine and beer, load it into your car, and drive back.

There is nothing wrong with that. I too have often filled my car up with cheap wine on my way back to the UK from being in France.
But I want to persuade you to venture a bit more into France and spend time enjoying the country.
In particular, I recommend Boulogne-Sur-Mer. It is a lovely place to visit and only a half hour drive from the ferry port at Calais (even less from the tunnel). See the tab ‘not just wine’ for tips on what to do in and near Boulogne, plus useful tourist site and accommodation links.
I have to be honest here, and confess to having an agenda for this site. I do have a house for letting, right in the heart of the old town. (Although there are a lot of other very good hotels and places to stay).
If you do become a member, you can get discounts on renting my house. Go to ‘RuedelaProvidence.com’.
